Privacy Policy
Last updated: 18 June 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Chekit (“Chekit”, “we”, “us”) collects, uses, shares, and protects your personal data when you use our website and marketplace. We handle personal data in line with the Kenya Data Protection Act, 2019 and guidance from the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC).
Chekit is currently pre-launch in Nairobi, Kenya. Some services described here are being rolled out; this policy covers both our marketing website and the marketplace as it goes live.
Information we collect
- Information you give us — your email address when you join the waitlist; your name, email, and message when you contact us; and, when the marketplace is live, account, order, delivery, and (for merchants) business and KYC details.
- Payment information — payments are processed through M-Pesa and our licensed payment partners. We receive confirmation of a transaction and the details needed to fulfil your order; we do not store full card numbers or M-Pesa PINs.
- Information collected automatically — basic technical data such as your device type, browser, and pages visited, used to keep the site secure and working. See our Cookie Policy for details.
How we use your information
- To add you to the waitlist and tell you when Chekit launches.
- To respond to your messages and provide customer support.
- To operate the marketplace — process orders and payments, arrange delivery, hold funds safely until you confirm your order, and issue KRA-compliant tax receipts.
- To verify merchant identity and prevent fraud and abuse.
- To meet our legal, tax, and regulatory obligations.
How we share your information
We share personal data only as needed to run the service, including with:
- Merchants and riders — the details required to prepare and deliver your order.
- Payment and delivery partners — to process payments and complete deliveries.
- The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) — where required to issue valid tax receipts and meet tax obligations.
- Service providers who help us operate (for example, email and hosting), under appropriate confidentiality terms.
- Authorities where required by law or to protect our users.
We do not sell your personal data.
Data retention
We keep personal data only for as long as needed for the purposes above or as required by law (for example, tax and transaction records). When data is no longer needed, we delete or anonymise it.
Your rights
Under the Kenya Data Protection Act, 2019 you have the right to:
- Be informed about how your data is used.
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
- Ask us to delete your data, where the law allows.
- Object to or restrict certain processing.
- Lodge a complaint with the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner.
To exercise any of these rights, email us at admin@chekit.co.ke.
Security
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your data. One of the core ways we protect buyers is that your payment is held safely and only released to a seller once you confirm your order arrived.
Cookies
We use a small amount of cookies and similar storage to keep the site working and remember your preferences. We’ll always ask for consent before using any non-essential cookies. See our Cookie Policy for the full detail.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Chekit grows and as services launch. We’ll post the new version here and update the date above.
